Theatrical Poster

First off I would just like to thank the movie gods for Peter Jackson. If it had not been for the hobbit loving Kiwi I very much doubt that this movie would be getting the release that it has. More to the point I very much doubt it would have been made at all on the scale that it is. Fortunately though Jackson’s Wingnut Films produced District 9, and director Neill Blomkamp has repaid Jackson’s faith in him tenfold. This is one of those films that is not only quite original, it is also that bloody good.

In 1982 an alien craft arrived in the skies above Johannesburg, South Africa. It didn’t go all gung-ho and crazy and start blowing the ass out of the town, instead it just hovered there. It didn’t move, nothing happened. Eventually a team was sent up to investigate what was going on. Once inside Continue reading »

DVD Release

A break-in occurs at a genetic research company, followed by several murders. An old blind man, Franco Arno, who lives near the company with his young niece, thinks he overheard a conversation relevant to these crimes, and links up with a reporter, Carlo Giordani, to investigate further. The killer, suffering from a genetic tendency to violence that the company had been researching, threatens the lives of the investigators as they get closer to the truth.

The second film of horror/thriller specialist Dario Argento relies much more on plot than his other works. For me that’s not really a virtue, as I tend to prefer his later supernatural fantasies like Suspiria, where Argento lets his imagination run Continue reading »

U.S. Release Artwork

Based on the Japanese novel by Yûsuke Kishi, the film stars Hwang Jeong-min (A Bittersweet Life) as Jeon Jun-oh; a former banker who has just started work as an insurance investigator. He receives a call, on his first day, from a woman asking if it’s possible to claim on her life insurance policy if suicide is the cause of death. He breaks the company’s golden rule of exposing personal details to a client and informs her of a tragic moment from his past that involved suicide; she thanks him and he continues on with his day thinking he saved someone’s life.

The next day he receives a request from a policy holder, unknown to him, to come to their house and discuss their policy. Upon arrival he’s met by the owner Park Chung-bae (Kang Shin-il – Silmido), once inside he asks Jeon if he will go and check on his son, when opening the boy’s bedroom door he discovers him hanged – an apparent suicide. The family are quick to cash-in on their life insurance on the seven year-old. Jeon, disturbed by all of this, sets out to prove that this was no suicide.

Events soon spiral out of control and he finds himself and his wife, Mina (Kim Seo-hyeong) in danger from Park; but Jeon is determined to get to the truth and save Park’s suffering wife Shin (Yoo Seon – The Wig) from this psycho. But the truth is far more shocking than first thought… Continue reading »

Highly Recommended!

Do aliens exist? Chances are, with the millions of planets throughout space, they do. Earth cannot be the only planet out there able to accommodate some sort of life form, it can’t. It’s a simple logic that will not be proven fact for many, many generations I’m sure. Unless some crazy ass V style alien invasion happens anytime soon… but I can’t see that happening, unfortunately.

So what if God never existed and the real reason we are here is because of ancient aliens? (No, I’m not a scientologist!) Maybe they’ve been watching over us? Monitoring us? It sure makes our existence feel more important doesn’t it? That some extraterrestrial thinks of us as ‘pets’! It doesn’t sound as “out there” as believing in a God who you can’t prove/disprove exists. Much like the theory that we are E.T’s pet planet, disprove it… I DARE ya’! Continue reading »

U.S. DVD Release

I’m not going to bog this review down with my usual rants and whining about Asian horror cinema and how it’s cannibalization itself because it’s all been said before. Fan objections aren’t making any kind of an impact on filmmakers so it really all comes down to, “Continue watching it or shut the hell up and move along.” I’ve chosen to just shut the hell up and watch because I’m still of the opinion that some of the worst Asian horror is putting some of OUR best homegrown theatrical horror to shame. Cannibalizing itself or not…watching crappy Asian horror will always be better than suffering through yet another gaggle of overweight, grease painted fat kid zombies. Continue reading »

DVD Release

Nick (Eric Lively) and Julie (Erica Durance) are young and in love and Nick is “on his way up” in the company he works for. Things are really looking up for them both and during Julie’s birthday celebration Nick convinces Julie to skip going to college for her degree. He wants her to stay with him so they can be happy.

During their trip back home with friends Amanda (Gina Holden) and Trevor (Dustin Milligan), the tire on Nick’s S.U.V. blows out and the car is sent into a dizzying tailspin. When the truck finally screeches to a halt, they’re broadsided by a jackknifing semi truck.

Nick soon wakes up in the hospital and discovers Continue reading »
