A masterpiece...of crap.

Some days are better than others when you’re king of the world, right? I mean the horror cinema community dubs you a “genius” and fans, producers and studios are constantly telling you that ALL of your films are masterpieces, what else is a man to think? When ass-kissing magazines and dishonest online critics hand your zombie films four and five stars on a daily basis, while strategically avoiding any serious discussion of your remaining body of mediocre non-zombie work, well, how can one not feel godlike? It’s easy to understand how a man can be fooled into thinking that he’s still making worthwhile contributions to the genre when you consider the immense amount of pressure he must be under to maintain that level of notoriety. Well here we are revisiting a small town in Iowa where due to water contamination, the residents are coming down with some mysterious illness that indeed makes them insane, murderous and downright nasty. A little thing called The Crazies.

Eisner and company remake the written and directed George Romero film from 1973 of the same title. Back in 1973, the incident of government misdeed occurs in Pennsylvania. Here we have moved to the Midwest in Iowa but the basic premise has stayed exactly the same. Goofy As Hell!

Yoshihiro Nishimura. If the mere mention of the man’s name sends shivers down the length of your geek bone, then you’ve probably been anticipating this film as well. Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl has been at the top of “Must-See” lists across the net for months now so I was truly excited to get my hands on this film for review. That’s an understatement actually, giddy is more like it.

I wasn’t disappointed to be honest, everything I received from Meatball Machine: ROD and Tokyo Gore Police was here as well! Italian Theatrical Poster

Paranormal Activity? HA! If Hollywood really wanted to scare the pants off of audiences they should have screened [REC] nationwide (dubbed of course) instead of spending the money on a remake. Don’t get me wrong Quarantine wasn’t bad, as far as remakes go, but it really doesn’t capture the raw terror [REC] was able to generate. As for PA, don’t even get me started on that pimped-out, feature-length episode of Paranormal State. It made loads of money sure but at the expense of horror critics losing credibility (again) and fans regretting their trip to the theater.

Mutants: The New Zombie?

Billed on some French posters as a cross between 28 Days Later and The Fly, David Morlet’s Mutants combines zombie cinema with something different, something we don’t get much of these days, scary mutants! What originally began as any other zombie apocalypse film quickly revealed itself to be something different, even a bit intriguing. You find yourself really becoming engrossed in the concept and taken in by the mutants. Be prepared though as all of that quickly wears off when the questions the film raises never seem to be adequately addressed.
