A grief stricken young woman who is desperate to contact her dead brother obtains an ancient vampire relic that is being sought after by two evil vampire lords and a vampire hunter.
This film is a total mish-mash of sub-genres that mix and mingle together to make a completely original viewing experience. You’ve got everything within, including the kitchen sink. You have warring vampire lords being chased by a weary vampire hunter (Jason Carter of Babylon 5). You get an ancient relic that controls the dead. They give you zombies, a séance and Andrew Divoff in a dime store wig? Oh yes, worth a view for that alone. Divoff and Tom Savini portray the vampire lords with smarmy gusto. They both ham & cheese Continue reading »

A tight-knit group of cops head out after their comrade’s funeral to serve up a little “justice” to the dope smuggling gang responsible but their payback is abruptly cut short when both cops and crooks are confronted and attacked by snarling, ravenous zombies! After taking heavy casualties on both sides, a tenuous truce is struck and a plan is set in motion; fight their way to the elevator, climb down to the first floor and fight their way out of the building. Even the best laid plans, or in this case half-assed plans, can go south though and the survivor count begins plummeting as zombies and their own stupidity gets the best of them. Can the remainder of the cops and robbers make it out of the building to safety and what lies in Continue reading »

S.E. DVD
The dramatic suicide of a priest swings the gates of hell wide open in the small town of Dunwich and the dead begin rising to take their revenge upon the living. A psychic medium and an investigative journalist must team up with a local psychiatrist in order to locate and destroy the undead corpse of the priest before All Saints Day to stop the spirits of the dead from roaming the Earth.
You’ve heard me say this a million times but I’m going to say it again anyhow, Fulci was a genius when it came to the art of the violent Italian horror set-piece. He crafted poorly written and illogical concepts into things of atmospheric, nightmarish beauty, on budgets that wouldn’t pay for bottled Continue reading »

Japanese DVD Release
When it comes to low budget filmmaking, the Japanese have hit upon an almost fool proof way to strike up some online buzz and secure themselves stateside distribution. You need a few simple, yet highly effective, ingredients: hot, young jail bait in uniforms, outrageous villains and over-the-top blood and gore. If you have these three things, no matter how non-existent your writing talent or budget is, you will succeed where thousands of American low budget films fail. One such example of this startlingly simple knock-out combo, though it hasn’t been picked up here yet, is Onechanbara: The Movie – vorteX (Chanbara Beauty 2: Vortex).
The first Onechanbara film, released by Continue reading »

A masterpiece...of crap.
Some days are better than others when you’re king of the world, right? I mean the horror cinema community dubs you a “genius” and fans, producers and studios are constantly telling you that ALL of your films are masterpieces, what else is a man to think? When ass-kissing magazines and dishonest online critics hand your zombie films four and five stars on a daily basis, while strategically avoiding any serious discussion of your remaining body of mediocre non-zombie work, well, how can one not feel godlike? It’s easy to understand how a man can be fooled into thinking that he’s still making worthwhile contributions to the genre when you consider the immense amount of pressure he must be under to maintain that level of notoriety. I do not envy George A. Romero. Continue reading »

Well here we are revisiting a small town in Iowa where due to water contamination, the residents are coming down with some mysterious illness that indeed makes them insane, murderous and downright nasty. A little thing called The Crazies.
Eisner and company remake the written and directed George Romero film from 1973 of the same title. Back in 1973, the incident of government misdeed occurs in Pennsylvania. Here we have moved to the Midwest in Iowa but the basic premise has stayed exactly the same. This is an out and out remake and of all the recent remakes that we have been treated to, this film, in my opinion was indeed a smart choice. The concept of The Crazies was Continue reading »

Goofy As Hell!
Yoshihiro Nishimura. If the mere mention of the man’s name sends shivers down the length of your geek bone, then you’ve probably been anticipating this film as well. Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl has been at the top of “Must-See” lists across the net for months now so I was truly excited to get my hands on this film for review. That’s an understatement actually, giddy is more like it.
I wasn’t disappointed to be honest, everything I received from Meatball Machine: ROD and Tokyo Gore Police was here as well! There was off-the-wall gore, hot schoolgirls, shockingly offensive stereotypes, social commentary (believe it or not) and even a little story! Did I mention monsters Continue reading »

Paranormal Activity? HA! If Hollywood really wanted to scare the pants off of audiences they should have screened [REC] nationwide (dubbed of course) instead of spending the money on a remake. Don’t get me wrong Quarantine wasn’t bad, as far as remakes go, but it really doesn’t capture the raw terror [REC] was able to generate. As for PA, don’t even get me started on that pimped-out, feature-length episode of Paranormal State. It made loads of money sure but at the expense of horror critics losing credibility (again) and fans regretting their trip to the theater.
When the first few teasers and trailers came out for [REC] 2, fans went nuts and rightfully so Continue reading »

Mutants: The New Zombie?
Billed on some French posters as a cross between 28 Days Later and The Fly, David Morlet’s Mutants combines zombie cinema with something different, something we don’t get much of these days, scary mutants! What originally began as any other zombie apocalypse film quickly revealed itself to be something different, even a bit intriguing. You find yourself really becoming engrossed in the concept and taken in by the mutants. Be prepared though as all of that quickly wears off when the questions the film raises never seem to be adequately addressed.
Mutants isn’t a bad flick, not by a long shot Continue reading »
