When I have a hankering for some good old fashion gore and sleaze nobody hits the spot quite like Joe D’Amato (Aristide Massaccesi). The man does sleaze like nobody’s business! He gives us some skin, he gives us some blood and guts and on occasion…he gives us a story. Buio Omega or Beyond the Darkness is one such offering.
Buio Omega starts off with a bang as we’re introduced to an ailing Anna (Cinzia Monreale) who lies sick and dying in a hospital bed. Quite how some movies manage to garner a reputation as being controversial is beyond me. As for the case of Anthropophagus it is even more bewildering. For some reason it was banned in the UK for many years, and heavily cut in other countries. A case of mistaken identity maybe? This could be the case, but I am thinking it was banned for fear it would put audiences to sleep.
During the almost 90 minute running time of this movie I saw one scene that could possibly have warranted cuts or, in the case of the aforementioned UK, a banning of the movie.
