Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) – Very well-done remake of an old TV movie and, at times, creepy, scary fun! A shocking throwback to the old style haunted house with a twist films. Continue reading »

Two-Lane Blacktop – This is a weird, out-of-the-way little car film from 1971 that’s just so damn cool it’s hard to care that there’s no story! Great cars and locations make this cult film a real stand out. Continue reading »

Super Hybrid – Wow, I mean, WOW! What can one say about a film about a man-eating shape-shifting car? Super fun! Yes it’s corny as fuck all, it had bad FX and the acting stunk but it’s a film about a man-eating car! Can you say cult classic? Continue reading »

Mother’s Day (2010) – Wow what a gem! I loved this film and I’m so pleased to see an R-rated remake. This film delivers the goods people; great acting, direction and violence! Continue reading »

The Sad Cafe is a dynamic action thriller from visionary young director Bennie Woodell and it follows the story of Jack, a hitman in a gritty world where life and death, love and hatred carry a high price. As Jack begins falling in love with a young waitress named Rose at a small cafe he dines at daily, he tells himself a woman like her can’t possibly love a man like himself.
Full of amazing acting from its small cast, the film looks great with colorful scenes and wonderful cinematography by Macario Cortes III and a nice score also helps the set the dramatic mood. In my opinion the sound did seem to be a bit off, mostly during James Jeske’s dialogue, and I had to guess a few Continue reading »

A “dirty bomb” attack in NYC, known as “Slime City,” is unleashed! The homeless (“displaced refugees”) are the last ones left. Four squatters searching for food in the ruins (Jennifer Bihl, Kealan Patrick Burke, Debbie Rochon, Lee Perkins) discover a supply of Zachary Devon’s Elixir and Himalayan Yogurt. When they drink the elixir and eat the yogurt, the real fun begins!
This is a follow-up to the cult hit Slime City from the 1980s but this new film takes us deeper into the world of Slime City and a bit beyond. First off I’ll say this for a tiny film, Slime City Massacre looks and feels huge it’s beautifully shot, very well made Continue reading »

Howard, a sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his home world and hurtled to Earth where he meets a young woman named Bev, as well as other weird characters. Now stranded on Earth, Howard must help his new found human friends stop an alien invasion.
What can one say about a film staring a talking duck? Epic? Amazing? Classic? Well thought out? HELL NO! When Howard came out in 1986 it tanked at the box office and, even later, on home video. Was it because Howard was a turkey? Well, at the time yes.
Director Willard Huyck and writer Gloria Katz seemed to have no idea how the events of the film should play out so the Continue reading »

A group of people trapped in an elevator realize they’re in serious trouble when, each time the lights go out, a member of the group dies. They quickly find out the culprit is none other than the devil and he’s hiding as one of them!
Devil is directed by John Erick Dowdle and written by Brian Nelson from a story by M. Night Shyamalan. The story may seem simple but it is, in fact, quite complex and at times very moving. Dowdle keeps things tense and the film moving, never letting the pace drop. Everything is lensed beautifully in 2:35.1 and looks amazing, as does the FX. Some great acting is also on display here from the cast, especially from Chris Messina as Detective Bowden Continue reading »

In a virtual realm called Avalon, four mercenaries kill monsters in an effort to score points. When a common foe threatens to destroy Avalon and beyond, the mercs must join forces to fight as one.
When I heard director Mamoru Oshii had a new film coming I was very happy, to say the least. Oshii did two of my fave films, Ghost in the Shell and Angels Egg, and his style is beautiful and haunting. I know others find his work to be slow and that’s something I’m comfortable with.
Now the synopsis sounds like a lot of fun right? Sure, why not. Here lies the films 1st problem, there is very, and I mean very Continue reading »

When four friends and a newcomer decide to take a small private plane to a rock concert they quickly find out this trip will be more then they bargained for when a malfunction sends their aircraft gaining altitude and out of control. A rookie pilot and her four teenage friends find themselves trapped in mid-air with a supernatural force determined to the end the lives of everybody on board.
Okay I know what your thinking, “How do you make a good horror thriller set in a tiny plane work?” Well believe it or not director Kaare Andrews does a fine job of keeping this tight space Continue reading »
