the-eternal-evil-of-asia The Eternal Evil of Asia is another wonderfully produced category III horror/voodoo/sex/comedy romp produced by legendary Wong Jing. Being one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hong Kong, anyone who knows what Wong is capable of, will have an inkling as to what they should expect in this hilarious tale.

Four friends travel to Thailand on a bachelor party excursion, but the trip goes awry when they befriend a local wizard and accidentally kill his sister. They return to Hong Kong, but the wizard follows and begins picking them off one by one. The wife to be has to decide to make a personal sacrifice to save the man she loves and her brother Continue reading »

black-magic-with-buddha I’ve learned something today. Evil Thai mummy brains aren’t something you should mess about with; it’s as simple as that. And if you do feel like keeping them for your own personal gain, make sure you feed them regularly. They tend to get rather mad if they are hungry. Like any other pet really. That’s something the protagonist of low budget Hong Kong sleaze Black Magic with Buddha learns when he goes to Thailand, takes home a brain with magic powers to use for his own personal gain. You see, our hero is somewhat of a looser. Only somewhat though, for a CAT III hero he is actually fairly likeable. He means well I suppose, he just doesn’t seem to think of the consequences of what he is doing, and the fact that it kills his sister and his wife’s family, well, he never seems to care that much about it. He comes off as Continue reading »

When a rattled photo development employee contacts local police about some suspicious pictures, Inspector Lee and his police force are horrified to discover pictures of what they believe to be dead women. The paper trail leads back to one Lam Gor-Yu, an odd introvert working as a night shift taxi driver. Believing the snapshots to be genuine, the cops raid his home and place him and his family under arrest.

Tortured by the detectives working the case and beaten by his outraged family members, Lam cracks under the pressure and agrees to confess to the crimes of murder. A further thorough search of the premises turns up not only VHS video Continue reading »

A gang of women are committing murders right and left, and they recruit Kitty (Chingmy Yau Suk-Ching), whose dad has just been killed by mom’s lover, to join them. Coincidentally, the troubled cop (Simon Yam) investigating the murders develops a crush on Kitty. Censored for many years, Naked Killer is a delirious Hong Kong mix of action, sex, camp, and violence. It is the prelude to Raped by An Angel (aka Naked Killer 2).

The skin-tight hot pants will keep you interested. Kitty is helped by Sister Cindy (Yiu Wai), who teaches her how to do it right – be a cleaner, that is. The movie is really funny. When one of the cops eats a victim’s “wedding tackle” thinking Continue reading »

Here’s a fun little number that I’ve yanked from the vaults to bring to you fellow gore/cheeze fans.

For those of you that haven’t yet peeped Riki-Oh and consider yourselves “serious” gore-film fans, you’re doing yourselves a major disservice. Imagine if you took the over-the-top grue of an old-school H.G. Lewis flick, gave it a few more bucks in the budget-department, set it in futuristic Hong Kong, and turned it into a bizarro amalgamation of cheezy kung-fu/sci-fi/horror/comic-book/comedy – you might get an idea of where to begin with this one.

Born of the lax film standards of late-80′s through mid-90′s Hong Kong cinema, this CAT III pleaser is a Continue reading »

Dear Purveyors of Despicable Filth (Discotek Media),

After having witnessed your recent Category III “gem” entitled Ebola Syndrome I have a few things I’d like to say to you.

Your repulsive film is jam-packed with blatant racism, extreme acts of graphic violence and mutilation, adult situations involving more than two people at once and instances of rape and torture. I must say that I am truly disgusted and offended by this immoral display of cinematic sociopathy and misogyny. If I was a better man I would have plucked my eyes out as the New Testament commanded! For those that aren’t familiar with what a “CAT III” film is, here’s a brief lesson (and if my information is incorrect – feel free to email me with corrections – the following is info that I’ve culled as a fan, not a scholar):

Category III (or “CAT III”, for those “in the know”…) is not technically a genre, but a rating. The government of Hong Kong introduced it’s rating system back in 1988, and “category III” is considered the “adults only” rating – not porn, but similar to an “R” or “NC-17″ rating in the U.S. The boom of CAT III films ran from the late 1980s until the late 1990s, at which point the political climate changed and the type of exploit/sexploit films made mainly during the 1990s ceased Continue reading »
