A deadly virus wipes out the majority of life on Earth, transforming mankind into undead zombies looking for the breathing meal. A small band of survivors are determined to fight their way across the country and to the California coast in the hopes of reaching Catalina Island, where there’s rumored to be a thriving population of survivors and, best of all, no undead.

I wish I could give you more to go on but, seriously, that’s about all there is to Zombie Apocalypse and, believe it or not, it works just fine for what it is. Now I know some of you out there may be turned off by the fact that this was produced by The Asylum, well known for their deceptive brand of exploitation cinema, but don’t judge this production by its producer. Sometimes I think to myself, what we really need are more horror movies with pirates in. Actually I don’t at all, but when you think about it there really aren’t that many. You have The Fog (top movie), The Fog (crap remake) and very few others. You’d think with all that killing, raping and pillaging they would be ripe for the genre. Regardless, there aren’t that many.

My first reaction when I came across Jolly Roger in the store was, somebody watched Pirates of the Caribbean and thought they would cash in on its success with a cheap and nasty genre flick. In all honesty I probably wasn’t that far from the truth, although this is not as bad as I thought it may have been. Let me start of by saying that I very rarely pay any attention to the blurb, or bollocks as I like to call it, on the cover of DVDs. I have fallen for the hype in the past where covers have proclaimed this, that or the other about their wonderful product. “Banned in whatever backwoods country” or “too shocking for this and that”. More often than not it is absolute crap, and is just a cheap ploy to boost sales.

There is the odd exception to this of course, but on the whole the blurb generally amounts to a big pile of false promises.

With so many zombie movies getting made and released these days it has become harder and harder to separate the shite from the good stuff. So when a good one does find its way into my DVD player it’s almost an excuse to have a party. Actually I don’t need an excuse for that but you know what I mean.

When I received Dead Men Walking I have to admit I wasn’t exactly expecting much. Zombies in a prison, whoopty-doo sounds like a cracker doesn’t it. Upon watching it though I was pleasantly surprised. But then, when your expectations are low I suppose the only way is up. That’s a little unfair though as this movie is above the usual quality that I have come to expect. Continue reading »

Imagine dropping a gold coin in a pig sty. Do you want it bad enough? Is the gold coin really worth slopping through pig feces and left over items from Farmer John’s “sheep night”? Will the pigs and your friends laugh at you for diving into the sty? Well, the answer to all of those questions is yes…yes the gold coin is worth it…yes your friends will laugh at you and yes…the pigs will as well. Watching Death Valley is no different.
