Midnight Syndicate

So folks, I met a really pleasant chap by the name of Edward Douglas recently, Midnight Syndicate’s founder, composer and director. Known the world over it seems for their scary, creepy, often sad but in a word haunting music. Ed Douglas is as unpretentious as can be and he is also an extremely talented composer. He utilizes and incorporates orchestral arrangements with synthesizers and organs. Tinkling piano keys in minor get me every time. Some lean Continue reading »

Alan Rowe Kelly (Above)

Independent film director and writer Alan Rowe Kelly is a far cry from the norm and I would like to introduce you to his neck of the woods in the horror genre. He is the writer and director of the independent films titled I’ll Bury You Tomorrow released in 2002 and The Blood Shed in 2007. In my opinion, The Blood Shed should become a cult classic. It’s an imaginative little slice of horror comedy and the character of Beefteena Continue reading »

Joe D'Amato (Above)

Aristide Massaccesi was born in Rome on the 15th December 1936. His father was involved in filmmaking, as an electrician, and clearly passed the film bug on to the young Aristide. Being born around the film world helped Massaccesi enter the business with ease, by the age of 14 he was helping to run wires and other such low-skilled work.

Massaccesi worked his way up the film-ladder throughout the 50’s and by the end of the decade he was a bona-fide assistant cameraman. By the early 60’s Massaccesi was hired by some of the greatest directors of that time, from Cult-icon Mario Continue reading »

Sergio Martino (Above)

Sergio Martino was born in Rome on the 19th July 1938. He is the Grandson of famed classic director Gennaro Righelli and the younger brother of writer/producer Luciano Martino. With family links within the cinema world dating back as far as 1911, when his Grandfather first directed, his entry into the industry was almost an inheritance. His brother had established himself as a screenwriter by the mid 50’s and it wasn’t long before Sergio was involved himself, acting in Sergio Corbucci’s L Ragazzi dei Parioli (Boys of the Pariloi) in 1959. Ruggero Deodato (Above)

Ruggero Deodato was born in Potenza, Italy, on May 7th 1939. As he grew, his love of movies grew with him; befriending Renzo Rossellini, the son of Art-house favorite Roberto Rossellini and brother of Isabella Rossellini. He was soon persuaded into the industry by Renzo to work on his fathers movies. By the age of eighteen he was helping with menial work on the sets of Rossellini’s movies.

By 1959, Deodato had worked his way up the ladder and was now Rossellini’s assistant director of choice on General della Rovere and his following Continue reading »

“Slasher September: An Introduction”
Written by Jeff Martin

Welcome to Slasher September at Joe Horror!

I know that those of you who are regular readers may be asking yourselves why such a high-brow, inundated with film-school theory and self-important website such as JH would lower itself to celebrating the much maligned sub-genre of “slasher” flicks. After all, any serious student of film knows that “slashers” are repetitive, shallow and serve to do nothing but show nudity and violence, primarily towards women. Continue reading »

“I Live For This Shit! : A (Bloody) Love Letter to the Horror Genre.” Written by James Newman

“Welcome to my nightmare
I think you’re gonna like it.
I think you’re gonna feel like you belong.”
– Alice Cooper

Be Afraid. Be very afraid.” – The Fly (1986)

“Come play with us, Danny. Forever . . . . ” – Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining

So I’ve been asked on more than one occasion why I write about “doom and gloom and death and violence.” Why I harbor this obsession with things most folks don’t like to Continue reading »

“Introducing Your Kids to Horror” or “Even the Firefly Clan Was a Family, Right?”
Written by Jeff Martin

Everyone now, take a moment and feel sorry for my kid. Poor [CHILD'S NAME WITHHELD FOR NATIONAL SECURITY REASONS]. It’s not just the fact that he has me for a father, but that I’m the Old School Motherfucker, the one who keeps horror history alive here on Joe Horror. Those are some big sandals to fill. Look at his name, for Christ’s sakes. [CHILD'S NAME WITHHELD FOR NATIONAL SECURITY REASONS]? Hell yeah, I named him after the androids from the Alien Continue reading »

Were you ever one of those guys or gals that never quite fit in at school? You weren’t cool enough to hang with the shallow, pretty people and not geeky enough to hang with the foreign exchange students and fat kids? I was one of those guys.

I was a gang member so the “in” crowds were out of my league. Course, hating sports and being a food stamp kid didn’t help either. I was normally thrown in with the long-haired bathroom smokers, behavior disorder kids and the…*GULP*…horror geeks. You know the kind…ratty hair, pimples, Dawn of the Dead t-shirt and a chain hanging out of their pocket. When and if you ever decided to join in on a conversation with them, you were almost instantly lost. Continue reading »
