sexy-time-trip-ninja This Japanese film of the ‘pink’ variety delivers what it promises. There is a ‘timetrip’, some ninjas, and some sex. As a film reviewer I often get caught up in the details and forget to have fun. This film is fun. Sure the sets are terrible, the acting ‘hammy’, and the story is not going to win a Newberry Award any time soon, but this adds to the fun! If B-movies are your thing, Director Yojiro Takita film is definitely worth a look. It delivers what it promises – ninjas, sex, and a ‘timetrip’.

The movie opens as a period piece on the Osaka Castle in 1615. The obvious fact that it is a model cannot be overlooked. He we meet Lord Sanada as he summons Sasuke Sarutobi to his chambers for a meeting. It seems the castle Continue reading »

man-on-a-ledge There’s something wonderful about films that explain the plot in the title, and subsequently repeat that somewhere in the film, because you know exactly what to expect when going in the theater, and anything that’s beyond the spectrum of the title is a bonus and nice surprise. Man On A Ledge does not disappoint in any of those areas, and is in fact a very fun little heist flick.

Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) was set up and sent to jail for twenty-five years for robbing a very precious diamond from David Englander (Ed Harris), a rich tycoon in Manhattan. With the help of his brother Joey (Jaime Bell) and his brother’s girlfriend Angie (Genesis Rodriguez), he escapes from jail and sets to prove Continue reading »

After many years in anticipation, Johnny Depp reprises his role as a Hunter S. Thompson alter ego in the new film The Rum Diary, and sadly, I think he took it one film too far.

It follows a young writer, Kemp, as he travels to Puerto Rico to join a failing newspaper and begin his writing career as an astrology writer. Along the way, he drinks a lot of rum with the paper’s photographer and roommate, nearly goes to jail, meets a beautiful young blond (Amber Heard), is invited to help a shady business scheme put on by a gentleman named Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart), and tries to discover his own “voice” to write his own novel.

That is all I took away as being the story from the seemingly endless two-hour marathon that is the film. Yes, it looks like there’s a lot involved, but it’s so sprawled out and Continue reading »

DVD/VHS Artwork

Here is an oddity, a shot on super 8 anthology horror movie that was shelved when the footage was deemed unusable, but “rescued” in 2010 when technology was available to make it watchable and released on DVD along with an actual VHS tape in a nice box with some other low rent crap like Cannibal Campout and the Video Violence movies. I do use the word crap with a bit of love for the same reason that I tend to watch movies like Burial ground over and over again, because they make me feel good. They give me a warm feeling in my stomach and a smile on my lips. Yes, it looks like shit (Shot on über grainy super 8 film), the dialogue is pretty god damn awful and the actors couldn’t even be accused of actually acting but the movie is full of so much yummy fun that you cannot hate it.

So, The Basement is an anthology movie in the same vein as Tales from the crypt where a group of characters meet in a basement where a guy in horror makeup tells them Continue reading »

Toronto, CANADA (September 14, 2011) – IFC Films announced today from the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival that the company is acquiring North American rights to Abel Ferrara’s 4:44 LAST DAY ON EARTH. The film, with a screenplay also by Ferrara, stars Willem Dafoe, Shanyn Leigh, Paz de la Huerta, and Natasha Lyonne and was produced by Fabula, Funny Balloons, and Wild Bunch. The film premiered earlier this month at the Venice Film Festival and is also set to screen at the upcoming New York Film Festival.

How would we spend our final hours on Earth? And what does how we choose to die say about how we have chosen to live? In the hands of the inimitable Ferrara, 4:44 LAST DAY ON EARTH is a thought experiment that takes on a visceral immediacy. With the planet on the verge of extinction, a New York couple Continue reading »
