In recent years, we’ve seen a lot of crazy films coming from Japan like Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police, that have upped the gore factor in cinema, but also make the audience anticipate the next “out there” idea they’re going to come up with. Surprisingly, 1986’s Sexy Battle Girls gave me some thrills in the same exact way, and gave me an insight into what was probably the inspiration for a lot of the Japanese trash cinema directors out there now.
Mirai, a young girl who has to forever wear a high tech chastity belt, is transferred to a new school by her father. While there, she uncovers an underground human trafficking ring set up by the head master and his head detective, selling girls to politicians. After this discovery, her father tells her the real reason why she was transferred there, and sets out to seek revenge for her families honor.
I think what I like most about Sexy Battle Girls is Mirai’s secret weapon, the Venus Clap. She’s been honing this skill for years, to unleash it at the right moment, and all I have to say is she can crush an apple and I’m sure you get my drift. We see the power unleashed twice in the film, and it just left me cringing, yet chuckling at how the vagina dentate myth has traveled all around the world and has been utilized in a number of films.
The cinematography in the film was also very well produced. The action sequences felt very reminiscent of anime from the mid to late eighties, right down to a flying pen having the blurred whirling lines behind it while flying in the air, like in Ninja Scroll. It was very nice seeing that in a live action setting, and having it work very well. The sex scenes were also shot in a way that wasn’t gratuitous at all, but had a very artistic, and intimate flare to it. It was a nice change of pace, and very unexpected.
The music in the film also fit perfectly. A lot of the soundtrack felt like a 70’s exploitation film, and the rest was orchestra music that gave the headmaster scenes feel upper class, since he was part of that level of people. I thought they did a very good job at matching what was happening on the screen with what we should be hearing.
If you’re a fan of Pink films from Japan, and haven’t seen Sexy Battle Girls yet, you really should consider checking it out. The hour just flew by, and it was incredibly entertaining.
