The honorable grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, is the pride of Fo Shan and the man to test your martial arts skills against. Ip Man is based on the true story of the title characters life in Fo Shan and his struggles during the Japanese occupancy of China. As the factories shut down and the population dwindles, starvation sets in and even the most prosperous of citizens are forced into poverty and fighting for their next meal.
Unfortunately no back story is given on the origins of Wing Chun (crosses fingers for Ip Man 2), however that knowledge is not required to immerse yourself in this wonderful heroic tale. Clocking in just shy of a 2 hour run time, it’s a bit lengthy compared to the 80 to 90 minute Kung Fu standard, but there’s not a dull moment and all emotions will be stimulated before the ride is over. The beautiful choreography and cinematography won’t disappoint the eye. It is obvious who the hero is the moment the camera captures the glow of this peaceful warrior. The entire cast did a fantastic job and worked well together but Donnie Yen really shines. His performance is flawless as usual and his display of Wing Chun skills are exceptional.
Not utilizing the time tested “Kung Fu” formula of “I’ve lost face, you’ve killed my master I must seek revenge”, Ip Man steps up and stands on it’s own two feet with exceptional balance, finesse and amazing demonstrations of one of the most beautiful forms of Kung Fu. If you are in the least bit interested in Martial Arts, this is a must see. If you are an avid fan of Kung Fu then you must reserve a space on your shelf for this one. Ip Man is definitely one of the best and is destined for Classic status.
