Two tabloid journalists investigate The Teardrop Killer, an over-sized carnival/circus clown who takes his hateful vendetta up with anyone and everyone.
This low budget slasher is one to take note of. I found this to be really well done even with its undercurrent of goofy cheese. This killer clown is over-sized and really creepy. His over-sized body matches right along side his over-sized meat cleaver and a really big vendetta of hate against society at large. Wicked! This slasher is very much about the ruined body, in my opinion. If that’s what you are looking for in your slasher then this has it in spades and it all looks really good. The use of white walls and the clowns black and white suit against the backdrop of gallons of blood splatter and guts is actually quite artful looking. They really got the blood color right in here and did I mention guts? Indeed, there are guts galore, again more about the ruined body. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and set ups in this film even with the over abundance of victims at this clown’s disposal. Most of these victims are just here for our most creepy clown to gut, slice, saw, smash and decimate. There isn’t always reason within for this most high body count but I didn’t care. There is enough back-story regarding our clown and our journalists to give this slasher less of a mindless feel. The police have been investigating our evil clown and have totally botched things up so the fact that tabloid journalists are one upping the police in the investigation is commentary in and of itself. A story in a slasher movie made nowadays? Very cool, I say. The clown’s back-story makes sense and with carnival characters and carni-law brought into the mix, I couldn’t have been more entertained.
The acting is hit or miss but frankly for the budget, I thought everyone held up well including Raine Brown. I loved the clown and his acting stood out above all, with wonderful shots of him taking off his makeup, the man just has a face that would make mothers hide their children. He’s just quiet, creepy and very large. He is a scary dude. Our two journalists and their banter, is at times humorous and their timing isn’t bad at all. They really do try to work it. I will admit there are flaws in here but honestly, I couldn’t have cared less for what this low budget shocker actually offered me in entertainment value. This little flick is quite reminiscent of something H.G. Lewis would have made if he were still making new films. This film is ugly beautiful and I highly recommend a watch if you are an avid slasher fan. With carnival folks and carni-law, I say thank you for taking care of your own and well, just taking care. I’ll be looking for more projects from these folks. Hopefully Davison is working on another script as we speak and I’ll be looking for him to work with Marcus Koch again. I’m impressed with the director here.
For fans of gore & guts galore and evil clowns, this gets my top recommendation for a newer slasher. Extra kudos given for a most hysterical midget chase. Okay, okay, he’s a dwarf but still, everything is better when you add little people. Can I get a 200 Tears please?
