After suffering the loss of someone close to him Derik decides to hitch a ride to visit his friend Jason. He hasn’t seen Jason in a few years but goes there in the hope of catching up with a familiar face and putting his current worries aside. However, when he arrives there is becomes quite apparent that Jason has changed, and isn’t the friend he once knew. Of course Jason puts him up, and does try to make him feel at home, however there is an underlying feeling that Derik is not wanted there.
Jason, and his new girlfriend, have new friends now, friends that are very secretive and who don’t take too kindly to outsiders. Despite this Jason agrees to take along Derik to one of their meetings. There he meets Gina, before passing out. Derik is now quite intrigued as to what is going on with Jason and his new family of friends, and even after a falling out finds himself bonding with Gina, who will show Derik more about the family.
Quench will require quite a bit of patience from the viewer as it slowly unravels its plot to the viewer. Saying that though I found it to be a highly enjoyable movie, its themes of loneliness and acceptance worked incredibly well. Whether or not you would call it a horror movie is completely open to interpretation; it certainly ends on a horrifying note though.
Initially the character of Jason comes across as completely unlikeable, and you can see why Jason is so hesitant to welcome him back. However, once we are introduced to the relationship between Derik and Gina it is far easier to sympathize with him, and why he is the way he is. After all, he is grieving the loss of someone close. Aside from this Quench is a well made movie that is quite gorgeous to look at, with some excellent use of color and shadow, especially during the scenes shot at night.
Quench is certainly not your run of the mill straightforward horror flick. It is a brooding movie that is in no hurry to get to its wonderfully crafted ending, and thus will no doubt turn off those that want their kicks thick and fast. For those that want a more thought provoking movie I would definitely recommend checking this out. Quench takes its time getting under your skin, but once it gets there it will stay there.
