A bunch of teens have robbed a bank are are looking for a place to lay low while the police deal with the chaos that has erupted due to a recent election of a right-wing conservative. Heading out of Paris they chose a little hotel in the middle of the sticks, owned by a whole family of lunatic Nazi’s! They have eyes on the girl, for breeding purposes, and have other designs on the fates of the men in the group – needless to say, it isn’t going to be pretty!

Frontier(s) is grime horror at its best! It’s a relentless piece that follows the current trend in French horror and features gallons of the red stuff and general unpleasantness. Some could see this as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in France, and they would be right, it’s pays homage to the American classic through out the movie; only amping up the perversity, aggression and violence to frightening levels.

Fans of the current crop of French New Wave movies like Them, Haunte Tension and Inside will find a place in their hearts for Frontier(s), while it’s not as good as its predecessors it’s still nasty enough to win its fair share of admirers. Casual horror fans may find the film too unsettling or even in bad taste (what with a multi-racial gang being wiped out by Nazi’s!) but the films political message can not be ignored and helps elevate the whole nasty affair beyond just another Hostel-inspired torture fest!

The film isn’t without its flaws however, the first thirty minutes could easily be removed from the film, and it’s a little too long at 108 minutes.

Frontier(s) is one sick puppy but it’s also a class act; from the cinematography and music to some interesting editing (even if it does tend to use nauseating OTT MTV style cuts from time to time! The violence is bloody and the tone is furiously misanthropic so it can be alienating to casual viewers, hardened fans will know what to expect from a film of this ilk and may even find themselves respecting the creators for not backing down.
