Our heroine of the previous two entries, Alice (Mila Jovovich), is back in action and continues her quest to find survivors after the T-Virus wipes out most of the world. She teams up with a band of survivors and leads them to Las Vegas to gamble their life savings! Not quiet, but they will be risking their lives as they face-off against super zombies – that look like lizards, zombie dogs, zombie crows and a big tyrant with tentacles. Do you really care? Are you still even reading this?
Granted, this film isn’t as bad as the previous two; but that isn’t a compliment. The makers have simply lost the plot here: wasn’t this based on a computer game? I’m pretty sure Las Vegas and sprawling post-apocalyptic landscapes feature in NONE of the video games that I’ve had the pleasure of playing. Seeing as they market these movies as ‘by fans, for the fans’ I’m not quiet sure what Paul W.S Anderson was thinking more along the lines of ‘the teenagers are gonna love this – it features a flame thrower, right on!’
The only thing that kept me watching this was will-power. I wasn’t going to let this flick beat me, as the first movie certainly did; but I found myself yelling at the screen many, many times – just why does Milla float when he jumps/kicks? Milla also needed a face-wipe, she has so much make up on she almost appeared CGI. Not one person stood out in the acting stakes, not even Oded Fehr; who is usually a very good actor. Here he’s wasted once again as Carlos the marine and potential love interest for Alice – yawn.
Sure there are some fun set-pieces, such as the crow attack and the sky-of-fire that ensues, but overall the action is overly pedestrian and nothing new. It realize on every zombie cliché in the book; even going as far as to ‘homage’ the ‘Bob’ character from Day of the Dead as some mad scientist goes about trying to domesticate the zombies! Seeing as Paul W.S. Anderson boats in the making of… that before Resident Evil there wasn’t a zombie film for 15 years (Oh really, Paul? I beg to differ) then why the fuck couldn’t he think up something original in any of these movies?
Boring as hell, with not a once of originality to be had. Some impressive visuals here and there will keep you from taking a nap but I can’t see many people WANTING to watch this unless they are already an established fan of the franchise. Those who aren’t keen on the other films will not want to waste their time or money on this: play the games instead!
