I know I’ve gone quite awhile without being a total scumbag and some of you have even taken time out of your busy schedules to ask if I’ve been feeling alright lately and I truly appreciate the concern. I suppose I just haven’t been in a really sleazoid mood lately, ya know? Sure I’ll occasionally crack some midget jokes and what not but that’s almost second nature to me…I just love the midgets.
Perhaps I’m going through one of those “trials & tribulation” periods we all go through as horror fans? Perhaps I no longer give a shit about hot whores and big-breasted strippers? Perhaps…perhaps my maturity has finally tracked me down?
FAT FUCKIN’ CHANCE!
If there’s one thing I know it’s this…flesh-eating strippers make me sweatier than a pack of naked midget nuns on dog leashes! *drools*
Devil’s Den is one of those B-movies you know damn well you may regret watching later but you just cannot help yourself…like…like staring at a puppy with one leg. It almost begs to be gawked at. Unlike the hilarious struggling puppy though, Devil’s Den won’t have you crying in shame over your lack of conscience later.
Two loveable losers, Quinn (Devon Sawa) and Nick (Steven Schub), are on their way back from Mexico after having scored a shipment of Spanish fly. Naturally, Nick isn’t convinced at all that Quinn’s new get-rich-quick scheme is going to work so they make a bet to see whether the Spanish fly actually works. Quinn decides to stop off at a little rural strip club in order to test the drug on an unsuspecting stripper.
The club, Devil’s Den, isn’t quite what Nick and Quinn were expecting…THE CHICKS WERE ACTUALLY HOT! No overweight, toothless whores for them nosiree! They quickly get to work and Quinn lucks out and hooks up with the lead stripper and incredibly fox, Jezebel (Dawn Olivieri). Naturally this gives Quinn the opportunity he needs and he spikes her beer with the Spanish fly. Not only does the Spanish fly work but Quinn scores himself a private lap dance from Jezebel!
Could this night get any better?
Not everybody in the Devil’s Den is looking for a good time though. A mysterious gun-toting assassin begins kicking down doors searching for Jezebel and Quinn but will she get to Quinn in time to save his life?
See…the strippers at the Devil’s Den aren’t your ordinary bootyshakers…THEY’RE FLESH-EATING GHOULS! Oh yeah baby! The club really kicks into high gear when Caitlin (Kelly Hu of X2) the assassin and Quinn come rushing in to discover the club up for grabs! Amidst the flying body parts and snarling she-devils is Leonard (Ken Foree of Dawn of the Dead), a samurai sword wielding monster hunter seeking to eliminate the queen of the ghouls!
Quinn, Caitlin, Leonard and ditzy waitress Candy (Karen Maxwell) must band work together in order to stay alive! With Leonard’s knowledge of monsters and Caitlin’s combat training they just might stand a chance but somebody in the group is harboring a dark secret that may change Quinn’s life forever!
Devil’s Den will probably have some of your red flags waving as it sounds just like Robert Rodriquez’s From Dusk Til Dawn but I assure you this stands on its own two feet as a silly little B-movie all its own.
For starters lemme just say that I believe Devon Sawa is an incredibly funny actor with great comedic timing. I look forward to seeing him in more upcoming horror films. I really gotta give him props for his role in this because he pulled off some entertaining shit and made a perfect sidekick for Leonard. I can totally see a sequel featuring these two reprising their roles.
The hotties in this were hot. Natch. I could have done with more nudity but this felt like one of those made-for-Sci-Fi Channel features and they normally don’t feature much in the way of flesh. Gore on the other hand it did deliver on…lots of it. There was blood and gore and severed heads all through this damn film! I wasn’t in the slightest bit disappointed with the FX.
There were a few stale bits here and there in the dialogue but nothing major. I feel this was far superior to writer Mitch Gould’s first endeavor, Demon Hunter. It was obvious director Jeff Burr tried to make this as entertaining as possible and it shows. The film never really gets “tense” and that’s fine because the foursome’s antics will keep you laughing.
Writer Mitch Gould gets quadruple props from me for adding that sweet little Zatoichi sequence in the film. Dude, way to put a smile on the cult cinema geeks faces!
If you’re in the mood for mindless entertainment, ghoulish strippers and killer squirrels head on over to Blockbuster, scoop this movie up along with some snacks and invite some friends over for a geeky get-together. This is a crowd pleaser!
